Dental crowns are not exactly as they sound. After all, they do not fit around the tooth like a traditional crown, but instead fit over the tooth to offer it protection from any further damage or decay. Patients of Mike Errico DDS in our Rolling Meadows, IL office may be fitted with crowns for a number of different reasons.
For example, a crown is often used when a tooth is treated for extensive decay. When too much of the original crown has to be removed, it makes a filling less effective and puts the tooth at risk for breaking later on. This is why Dr. Errico, will suggest dental crowns that sit over the tooth and allow it full function while also enjoying the necessary treatment.
However, this is not the only time that our patients may benefit from dental crowns, and they may have them recommended for:
- Completion of a dental implant treatment
- Part of a root canal treatment
- When a tooth needs to be restored
- When an old-fashioned amalgam filling is removed
Dental crowns are a part of the multi-part treatment that are known as dental implants. Essentially, the implant uses a base or post that replaces the original roots of the tooth and which is implanted into the jaw and gum. When healed fully, the integrated post is then topped with a crown, and it looks and feels as if the tooth was never lost at all.
Of course, dental crowns are also a common treatment during root canal therapy. Traditionally, the process of removing the pulp of the tooth leaves the original crown thin or weakened. To ensure that no further problems trouble that tooth, dental crowns are the trusted method of completing the treatment.
Also, as a form of restorative dentistry, dental crowns can be used to cover a tooth that has been severely damaged or one that once had a large, amalgam (metal) filling. In both cases, the tooth may be too weakened and the crown is the best way to ensure that a natural tooth remains in place.
You don’t have to live without a tooth or struggle with a weakened and vulnerable tooth thanks to our restorative dentistry options and dental crown treatments.
