After a dentist has fitted a tooth with a crown, some patients may believe there is no need to maintain proper dental care for that tooth, since the decay has been removed and a crown has been fitted over the remaining tooth. Nothing could be further from the truth.
At the office of Dr. Michael R. Errico & Associates, we educate and encourage our patients who have received crowns to properly care for them and schedule regular check-ups to ensure the health of their crowns and all of their teeth. However, we often encounter new patients who have not been previously informed about the need to take care of their crowns. They believe the crown protects the tooth from any further decay or cavities.
Unfortunately, decay can occur under a crown due to plaque that can form at the point where the crown and the original tooth meet. Crowns are made of a strong material– usually porcelain– but even so, plaque can lead to decay and the formation of a cavity. It then becomes necessary to replace the crown with a new one, a procedure that can easily be avoided with careful brushing and flossing and regular visits to your dentist.
A simple dental exam and cleaning can help detect any signs of decay or cavities on the tooth under the crown before they become major problems. If you currently have problems with your crowns or believe you may need a crown for one or more of your teeth, Dr. Errico can provide the exceptional care and experience you’re looking for in a dentist.
